Diversifying the Scientific Supply Chain

HappiLabs is working with the University of Illinois-Chicago to conduct an assessment of the supply chain that supports the U.S. Life Sciences industry. We will dissect various components that constitute the backbone of scientific progress.

Four interns from a master’s class in supply chain management and Virtual Lab Managers from HappiLabs assessed about 70 lab supply distributors and manufacturers in this industry. These suppliers specialize in providing a wide range of products, equipment, and services essential for conducting experiments and advancing scientific knowledge.

This series of blog posts will report findings and discuss various aspects of suppliers, such as geographic location, their size, who owns them, and other metrics related to the diversity of leadership in this industry.

Our goal is to diversify the scientific supply chain. We aim to quantify how dominant the top few suppliers are, and increase awareness of the various suppliers and manufacturers who are not well known.

If scientists can have more freedom and flexibility in their purchase choices, they will not only be happier, but they will do better science.
